The eighth and penultimate round of the XIV International Tournament Ciudad de Pontevedra has left emotions running sky-high. With just one game to go before the curtain falls, the Amateur category already has a virtual champion, while in the Masters group the fight for the absolute crown promises a finale not for the faint of heart.

Maximum tension in the Masters: three candidates and a norm dream for Cacheiro

The battle for the title in the demanding Masters group will go to the final round with a three-way tie at the summit. After today's relentless clashes, three players lead the standings with 6.5 points and will depend on themselves to lift the trophy tomorrow: Indian Grandmaster Sayantan Das, who secured victory with the white pieces on board two; Indian Grandmaster Raja Rithvik R., who also won with White against Bulgarian GM Vladimir Petkov; and Cuban International Master Luis Daniel Rodríguez Hernández, who stormed board three by defeating GM Jorge Roberto Elías Reyes with Black.

However, the great local protagonist of the day was Galicia's Diego Cacheiro Blanco. The FIDE Master fought a titanic and agonizing battle against GM Sayantan Das on board two. It was the last game to finish in the entire category, approaching five hours of grueling play. Although the immense toll eventually caught up with him and sealed his defeat, Cacheiro has every reason to rise tomorrow stronger than ever: if he wins his final game, he will claim the immensely valuable prize of an International Master norm.

Female talent, one step away from history

In the Masters women's standings, the very young Indian player Modipalli Deekshitha, just 13 years old, remains the top-ranked woman with a fantastic 5.0 points. Today she suffered a tough setback, falling to veteran Hungarian Grandmaster Robert Ruck. Yet the consolation is immense: at her young age, a draw in tomorrow's round will be enough to secure her first, long-dreamed-of International Master norm.

Spanish Champion Sabrina Vega is climbing back up the ranks. Two consecutive wins, the latest against Cuban Grandmaster Orelvis, will allow her to fight in the final round for a place in the tournament's top ten.

Amateur category: Oubiña, virtual champion after toppling local talent

In the Amateur category, the tournament has one name written almost in gold: Ricardo Oubiña Pazos. The leader showed why he sits at the top of the table by defeating local player Brais Moreira Novo with the black pieces on board 1. This vital victory catapults Oubiña to 7.5 points, leaving his closest group of pursuers a full point behind and making him, almost mathematically, the champion of this edition.

Meanwhile, women's chess in this category continues to be firmly led by Irene Diz Loroño. The Spanish player signed a strategic draw with the white pieces against Iván López Sánchez. With this result, Irene reaches 6.0 points, cementing her status as the top-ranked woman in the group and staying among the upper reaches of the overall standings.
