The excitement reached its peak in the fourth round of the XIV International Tournament Ciudad de Pontevedra. With the halfway point of the competition now in sight, the board has become a stage of high strategic tension where the title fight is beginning to take shape, while international experience is tested against the very young emerging talent from our home.

The fight for the lead: maximum equality at the top

In the Masters category, the standings are tightening in the top positions. After the demanding matchups of this fourth round, a trio of titans sits at the top with 3.5 points.

Ukrainian Grandmaster Vitaliy Bernadskiy clinched a decisive victory with the black pieces against Portuguese FIDE Master Pedro Gil Ferreira Da Silva. Indian Grandmaster Sayantan Das also took the full point by defeating his compatriot Nirvan Bhamidi with Black. Indian International Master Muthaiah AL remains in the leading group after a solid draw against Cuban GM Jorge Roberto Elías Reyes on board one.

Meanwhile, in the Amateur category, competition is fierce and up to six players have achieved a perfect score. Their 4.0 points see them co-lead the table: Rafael Montero Campuzano, Mauro Castro Barciela, Hugo Souto Corredoura, Noel Leis Pazos, Irene Diz Loroño, and Ricardo Oubiña Pazos imposed their will in this fourth round, winning their respective games and promising thrilling matchups for round 5.

While the leaders battle for the crown, the most endearing and astonishing glances are directed at the representatives of Escola Xadrez Pontevedra (EXP). Our players' performance is a demonstration of fighting spirit, but above all, of a promising future.

In today's spotlight shone the Lema brothers, whose extraordinary precocity is leaving a mark on this edition of the tournament. Both face each game with a composure beyond their years, worthy of EXP's great players.

Without a doubt, the pairing that drew all eyes from our fans was that of 11-year-old Javier Lema against Grandmaster Orelvis Pérez Mitjans. Facing a Grandmaster is always a baptism of fire, but doing so at 11 is a feat within reach of very few. Playing White, young Javier put up a brave fight on the board. Although the veteran experience of GM Orelvis ultimately prevailed, the game stands as an invaluable testament to Javier's immense talent against the world elite.

On the other hand, in the Amateur category, we highlight the astonishing consistency of young Martín Lema, who, at just 8 years old, managed a commendable draw in this fourth round. This valuable result allows him to reach 1.5 points, standing firm and unfazed ahead of the upcoming matchups.
